MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
The first six-core MacBook Pro, with True Tone and the T2 chip.
Overview
The 15-inch MacBook Pro of July 2018 added Intel Coffee Lake processors, the first six-core chips in a Mac laptop, up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a maximum of 4 TB of storage. The display gained True Tone, which adjusts white balance to ambient light.
The Apple T2 security chip handled Touch ID, secure boot and encrypted storage, and enabled hands-free Hey Siri. The keyboard used a quieter butterfly mechanism, though complaints about reliability continued.
In May 2019 Apple released an eight-core Core i9 configuration and updated Radeon Pro Vega options, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro with a scissor keyboard replaced it that November.
Why it mattered
Brought six- and eight-core performance and the T2 chip to the mainstream Pro laptop.
