MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Touch Bar)
The Touch Bar, Touch ID and four Thunderbolt 3 ports arrived together.
Overview
The late 2016 redesign was the biggest change to the Pro line in four years. A 13.3-inch Retina display with the wider P3 color range sat above a larger Force Touch trackpad and the second-generation butterfly keyboard. The row of function keys became the Touch Bar, a thin touch strip that changed with each app.
Touch ID on the power button added fingerprint login, and every port was replaced by Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, with up to four on the Touch Bar versions. A cheaper variant with two ports and no Touch Bar sold alongside it, and a 2017 update added Kaby Lake chips.
The July 2018 refresh added quad-core processors, True Touch display and the T2 security chip, but the design drew criticism for keyboard reliability.
Why it mattered
Introduced the Touch Bar and Touch ID to the Mac and moved the line fully to Thunderbolt 3.
