iMac Pro
A Space Gray 27-inch iMac with workstation guts.
Overview
The iMac Pro was Apple's answer to the demand for a high-performance all-in-one. It used the familiar 27-inch 5K chassis in a dark Space Gray finish, with a color-matched keyboard, mouse and trackpad. Inside, a redesigned dual-fan cooling system sat where the old hard drive bay had been.
The starting model had an 8-core 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon W, 32 GB of ECC memory, a 1 TB SSD and a Radeon Pro Vega 56 with 8 GB of memory. Options reached 18 cores, 256 GB of memory and a Vega 64. It was the first Mac with the custom T2 chip and the first with 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Four Thunderbolt 3 ports, four USB-A, an SDXC slot and a 1080p camera completed the package. The speakers were stronger than those in the standard iMac. Memory could only be changed by an authorized technician.
Why it mattered
It showed that an all-in-one could be a pro workstation, a concept later carried by the Mac Studio.
