iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation)
The large Pro gains LiDAR, dual cameras and an A12Z Bionic.
Overview
The 2020 12.9-inch iPad Pro was a mid-cycle update. The body, display and Face ID system matched the 2018 model, but a camera module now housed a 12-megapixel wide lens, a 10-megapixel ultra wide and the new LiDAR scanner.
The A12Z Bionic improved graphics performance, and every configuration shipped with 6 GB of memory. The larger enclosure allowed a bigger battery, which still delivered about ten hours of use.
It was the model most closely associated with the Magic Keyboard launch, since the 12.9-inch size paired well with the trackpad-equipped case. Software features such as iPadOS 13.4's cursor support helped position it as a laptop alternative.
Why it mattered
Paired with the Magic Keyboard, it was the model that made pointer-driven iPad workflows credible.
