iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)
A new look: no home button, Face ID and USB-C.
Overview
The 2018 iPad Pro was the biggest redesign since the first Pro. The home button disappeared, Face ID with a TrueDepth camera appeared in the bezel, and the rounded sides gave way to a flat-edged aluminum frame more like the iPhone 5 era. Bezels were uniformly thin, and the 11-inch screen occupied almost the same footprint as the old 10.5-inch model.
The A12X Bionic chip had an eight-core CPU and a seven-core GPU and was faster than many laptop processors of the time. For the first time an iPad had a USB-C port, which could charge the iPhone, drive an external display and connect storage or cameras.
The second-generation Apple Pencil clipped magnetically to the side to charge and pair, and the new Smart Keyboard Folio wrapped front and back. Cameras were a 12 MP rear and a 7 MP TrueDepth front.
Why it mattered
Established the edge-to-edge design, Face ID and USB-C that every later Pro, and eventually most iPads, adopted.
