iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation)
M2 speed and Apple Pencil hover in an unchanged body.
Overview
The fourth-generation iPad Pro kept the exterior of the earlier model almost exactly the same and spent its upgrades on speed and pen features. The M2 chip improved CPU and graphics performance over the M1, and a faster Neural Engine and media engine allowed the tablet to record video in ProRes.
Apple Pencil gained hover detection: the tip could be sensed up to 12 millimeters above the display, letting apps preview tools or brushes before the pen touched the surface. This suited sketching, note taking and precise annotation.
Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 improved connectivity, and Thunderbolt / USB 4 stayed from the previous model. The rear camera array of wide and ultra wide lenses plus LiDAR carried over, and Stage Manager arrived with the iPadOS 16.1 update that shipped on this hardware.
Why it mattered
A speed-bump refresh that introduced Apple Pencil hover and set up the major OLED redesign that followed.
