iPad Air 2
Barely 6 mm thick, with three CPU cores and 2 GB of RAM.
Overview
The iPad Air 2 trimmed the thickness to 6.1 mm, which at the time made it the thinnest tablet on the market. To get there Apple fused the display, touch layer and cover glass into a single laminated stack and applied an anti-reflective coating that cut glare noticeably.
The A8X chip had three CPU cores and a graphics unit with eight clusters, and 2 GB of RAM finally gave the iPad enough memory to run multiple apps side by side in later versions of iOS, starting with iOS 9 Split View. An 8-megapixel camera with burst and slow-motion modes replaced the old 5-megapixel sensor.
Touch ID and a faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi radio rounded out the changes. The Air 2 lived on in the lineup until 2017 and got iPadOS updates through iPadOS 15.
Why it mattered
Introduced the laminated, anti-reflective screen and 2 GB of RAM that enabled iPad multitasking.
