A fully loaded version of Apple's new touchscreen MacBook Pro now costs more than $14,000, according to MacRumors, which tallied the configuration prices on Apple's online store after pre-orders opened on October 28.
The top configurations
MacRumors reports that the maximum 14-inch model comes to $14,249, while the 16-inch tops out at $14,549. Both use the M5 Max chip with an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, 128GB of unified memory, a 16TB SSD and the optional nano-texture glass.
Where the money goes
The storage upgrade is the biggest single line item. On the M5 Max models, moving from the standard 2TB drive to 4TB adds $1,000, 8TB adds $3,000, and 16TB adds $7,000. The 16TB tier is new: the previous generation stopped at 8TB. Stepping from 48GB to 128GB of memory adds $2,000, and the nano-texture display option adds $150, per the same report.
Starting prices
Entry prices have also risen compared with the previous non-touch models, according to MacRumors' comparison. The 14-inch M5 Pro starts at $2,899 (up from $2,499) and the 16-inch M5 Pro at $3,399 (up from $2,999). The M5 Max versions start at $4,499 for the 14-inch and $4,799 for the 16-inch, each with 36GB of memory and a 2TB SSD, up from $4,099 and $4,399.
Compared with last year's top model
MacRumors notes that the previous 16-inch M5 Max topped out at $10,149 with 128GB of memory, an 8TB SSD and nano-texture glass. The new maximum is $4,400 higher, but it includes double the storage. At the same 8TB capacity, the new 16-inch model costs $10,549, which is $400 more than before.
Availability
Pre-orders are open now, and sales begin on November 6, according to the report. Apple's own newsroom announcement covers the touch display and the rest of the lineup; prices above are those MacRumors compiled from the configurator, so check Apple's store for the figures that apply in your region and for any later changes.
