Apple's new HomeView smart home hub will reach customers running software that is roughly six months old, according to a report from MacRumors.
Reporter Joe Rossignol writes that HomeView units will ship with HomeView software version 26.5, a build listed in AppleDB, a firmware database that tracks Apple's releases. That version predates the current 27.2 software that Apple has been showing off in recent days. MacRumors says owners will be prompted to install an update to HomeView software 27.2 during setup, so the older build should only be seen briefly.
HomeView goes on sale on Friday, November 13, 2026. Apple announced the device on October 13 as a 7-inch smart display with Siri AI and a $299 price, and pre-orders are already open. The hub uses an A18 chip.
The version number is notable because HomeView's launch slipped. MacRumors points to its own October 14 report on the delay and describes the 26.5 finding as another piece of evidence that the product was held back from an earlier release. In practical terms, the hub appears to have finished its factory software well before the product was ready to ship, which is why it will need an update straight out of the box.
For buyers, the main consequence is a mandatory first step. Anyone setting up a HomeView will need an internet connection and a few minutes to download the newer software before using the features Apple has previewed, including the Liquid Glass interface and the new wallpapers and Control Center options covered in recent HomeView 27.2 coverage.
MacRumors notes that Apple has not commented on the software version. It is also worth keeping in mind that the 26.5 detail comes from a firmware database rather than from Apple, so the company's own packaging and setup flow will be the final word once the first units arrive in customers' hands.
Apple routinely ships new hardware that needs an update on first launch, so a day-one download is not unusual in itself. What stands out here is the size of the gap: a full major software generation separates the factory build from the version customers are meant to use.
Cupertino News will follow any further HomeView software details as the November 13 launch approaches.
