MacBook Air (Mid 2013)
Haswell brought all-day battery life to the Air.
Overview
The 2013 MacBook Air kept the familiar wedge body while changing nearly everything inside. Intel Haswell chips at 1.3 GHz, a new Intel HD Graphics 5000 chip and a faster PCIe-based flash drive made it much quicker, and Apple claimed 9 hours of battery on the 11-inch and 12 hours on the 13-inch.
It was the first Mac with 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and two microphones improved the sound of calls. Prices started at 999 dollars for the 11-inch model and 1,099 dollars for the 13-inch.
The design stayed on sale in essentially the same form until 2017, with only small speed bumps in 2014 and 2015, making it one of the longest-running Apple laptop shapes.
Why it mattered
Set a new standard for laptop battery life and anchored the Air line for years.
