Mac Pro (2019)
The tower returns, modular and with a 1.4 kW power supply.
Overview
After the cylinder, the 2019 Mac Pro swung back to a fully expandable machine. A stainless-steel frame with a lattice front and an aluminum housing opened to expose eight PCI Express slots, MPX modules for graphics, and an enormous power supply.
The base model had an 8-core Xeon W at 3.5 GHz, 32 GB of ECC memory, a Radeon Pro 580X and a 256 GB SSD. Top configurations offered a 28-core 2.5 GHz Xeon, twelve DIMM slots for up to 1.5 TB and two dual-GPU MPX modules. An optional Afterburner card accelerated ProRes video.
Two Thunderbolt 3 ports and two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports sat on the back, with two more Thunderbolt 3 ports on the top. It launched alongside the Pro Display XDR and was available as a rack-mount version.
Why it mattered
It restored a fully upgradable Mac Pro and became the last Intel Mac Pro.
