Mac Pro (2023)
The last Mac Pro: an M2 Ultra tower with PCIe slots but no GPU upgrades.
Overview
The 2023 Mac Pro completed Apple's transition to its own chips. It reused the stainless-steel and aluminum tower from 2019 but replaced the Intel Xeon with the M2 Ultra: a 24-core CPU, a 60 or 76-core GPU and up to 192 GB of unified memory, all fixed to the board.
Its selling point was PCI Express: six full-length Gen 4 slots and one half-length Gen 3 slot for audio, video capture and networking cards. Discrete GPU cards were not supported. The machine offered eight Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A, two HDMI 2.1 ports, two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a headphone jack, with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
The starting price of $6,999 was $3,000 above a similar Mac Studio, and its performance was close, so sales were modest. In March 2026 Apple discontinued the Mac Pro and said it had no plans for further models.
Why it mattered
It ended the Intel era of Apple's highest-end desktop and, as the final Mac Pro, closed a line that began in 2006.
