Craig Federighi
Senior Vice President, Software Engineering
Leader of Apple's software engineering, responsible for iOS, iPadOS, macOS and the company's core AI features, and a regular keynote presenter.
Current At Apple: 1997-1999, 2009-presentBiography
Craig Federighi grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a bachelor's degree in 1991 and a master's in computer science in 1993. He worked at NeXT, where he led development of the Enterprise Objects Framework, and joined Apple when it acquired NeXT in 1997.
He left in 1999 to work at Ariba, where he became chief technology officer, and returned to Apple in 2009 to lead macOS engineering. In 2011 he took over Mac software engineering from Bertrand Serlet and in 2012 became a senior vice president. When Scott Forstall left in late 2012, Federighi's remit widened to cover iOS as well, so that Apple's operating systems were developed under one leader.
Federighi is known for his humorous presentations at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference. He has overseen the software behind Apple's annual OS releases, including the Liquid Glass redesign of 2025, and as of 2026 he also oversees Siri and Apple Intelligence, the company's core AI effort. He is a member of Apple's executive team under CEO John Ternus.
He is also known for his role in presenting the company's positions on privacy and security. His team ships major releases of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS each year, usually unveiled at WWDC in June and released in the autumn, and it has also been responsible for Apple's move to a year-based version numbering scheme in 2025.
