Apple's long-rumored OLED MacBook Pro could cost noticeably more than the model it replaces, according to a new pricing report. MacRumors, citing Bloomberg, says the 14-inch version with an M5 Pro chip could start at $2,899, which would be $400 above the $2,499 asking price of the current M5 Pro configuration.

The figure is reported as a price Apple has discussed, not a confirmed one, and nothing has been announced by Apple at the time of writing.

What the report says about the 16-inch model

MacRumors writes that if the larger OLED MacBook Pro receives the same $400 increase, it could start at $3,399. That number is an extrapolation rather than something Bloomberg reported directly, and Bloomberg suggests the 16-inch model might end up costing even more.

The hardware that is expected

The coverage describes both the 14-inch and 16-inch models as getting OLED touchscreens, which would make them the first touch-enabled Mac laptops Apple has sold. Other rumored changes include:

  • a Dynamic Island cutout in the display
  • a redesigned hinge meant to keep the screen steady when it is touched
  • thinner bezels and a slimmer, lighter body
  • an updated cooling system that improves airflow through the hinge

The chips are said to be the same M5 Pro and M5 Max parts used in the current models, rather than the new M6 generation that Apple introduced this week in the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac.

Timing and what stays on sale

Apple has confirmed a media event in Los Angeles on October 28, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said the touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to be shown there. According to the report, pre-orders would open at 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time, alongside the products Apple has already revealed. MacRumors also says Apple is expected to keep selling the existing mini-LED MacBook Pro models next to the OLED versions, which would leave a cheaper option for buyers who do not want a touchscreen.

Until Apple speaks, treat all of the pricing as unconfirmed. We will update our coverage once the company publishes official specifications and prices.
