Hours after the iPhone Duo reached customers, reports of cracked inner displays have started to circulate online. According to MacRumors, photos of damaged screens have been posted on Reddit and in its own forums, with the faults concentrated along the hinge.

What owners are describing

MacRumors says most of the reported problems appear as a line of bright pixels on one side of the screen. One owner in Australia wrote that he had used the phone for about six hours and "had probably opened it fewer than 20 times" before he heard an audible crack and the display broke along the hinge. MacRumors says the phone showed no visible damage beforehand.

The outlet also points to several photos of broken displays on demo units in China. It stresses that the scale of the problem is unknown: no total number of affected devices has been given, and the reports so far come from individual owners rather than from any systematic testing.

Apple's response and your options

The Australian owner took the phone to an Apple Store, where, according to MacRumors, Apple replaced it on the spot. MacRumors speculates that Apple is likely collecting faulty units to study where they fail, which could feed into manufacturing changes. That is the outlet's assessment, not something Apple has said. Apple has not publicly commented on the reports in the material reviewed.

MacRumors notes that hinge failures under normal use should fall under Apple's one-year limited warranty, and that customers who bought an iPhone Duo at launch have a two-week window to return it.

A small sample on both sides

The reports arrive after several reviewers ran folding tests on early units without seeing screen problems, including one reviewer who folded a Duo tens of thousands of times and said the hinge felt unchanged. MacRumors cautions that the sample is small. A handful of early failures among many buyers can reflect a manufacturing batch, individual handling or a wider design weakness, and it is too early to tell which applies here.

For now, the picture is incomplete. Apple's hinge design, shown in its own product imagery, is central to the foldable's pitch, so any pattern of failures would draw attention. Anyone who sees display faults on a new Duo can take it to an Apple Store, and buyers who are unsure can use the return window.

Cupertino News will follow up if Apple comments or if reports of the problem grow.
