Mac Studio (2025)
M4 Max, M3 Ultra and Thunderbolt 5, with up to 512 GB of memory.
Overview
The March 2025 Mac Studio offered two different chips. The M4 Max came with a 14 or 16-core CPU and a 32 or 40-core GPU, with up to 128 GB of memory. The M3 Ultra, a doubled M3 Max, gave a 28 or 32-core CPU, a 60 or 80-core GPU and an unprecedented 512 GB of unified memory option at 819 GB/s bandwidth.
Thunderbolt 5 ports with up to 120 Gb/s replaced Thunderbolt 4, six on the Ultra and four on the Max, plus HDMI 2.1, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and two USB-A. The front had two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 5 on the Ultra) and an SD card slot. Hardware ray tracing and AV1 decoding arrived with the new silicon.
Storage reached 8 TB on the Max and 16 TB on the Ultra. Power supply capacity rose to 480 W.
Why it mattered
It made a desktop with half a terabyte of unified memory possible, and drew attention from AI researchers.
