iPhone 8
Glass back, wireless charging and the A11 Bionic chip.
Overview
The iPhone 8 was the last iPhone built around the classic home-button design that dated back to 2007. Its aluminum back was replaced with strengthened glass, which let radio waves pass through for Qi wireless charging, and a 7000-series aluminum frame wrapped around it. A new gold finish arrived alongside silver and space gray.
The A11 Bionic chip had six cores and included Apple's first in-house GPU and a Neural Engine for machine learning tasks. True Tone adjusted the white balance of the display to the surroundings, and a new image signal processor improved color and noise. The camera recorded 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, and it was calibrated for augmented reality apps through ARKit.
Fast charging took the battery to about half in 30 minutes with a suitable adapter. The phone launched a few weeks before the iPhone X, which drew most of the attention.
Why it mattered
It marked the end of the classic design and brought wireless charging to the iPhone.
