iPhone 7 Plus
The first dual-camera iPhone, with optical zoom and Portrait mode.
Overview
The 7 Plus took everything good about the iPhone 7 and added a second rear camera. A 12-megapixel wide lens sat beside a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, giving a 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. It was a first for Apple's phones.
A software feature called Portrait mode used the two lenses to estimate depth and blurred the background for a shallow-focus look that previously required a dedicated camera. It arrived as a beta in iOS 10.1 and quickly became a signature iPhone feature. The phone also had 3GB of RAM, a first for an iPhone, which helped keep apps in memory.
Water resistance, stereo speakers, a wide-color 5.5-inch display, A10 Fusion performance and the haptic home button were carried over, and there was no headphone jack. It started at $769 for the 32GB model.
Why it mattered
The dual-camera system started the move toward multi-lens iPhones and made computational portrait photography a key selling point.
