Rumor. This story is based on unconfirmed reports. Details may change before anything is announced.

A new iPad mini Smart Folio has appeared on one of Apple's own regulatory web pages, and it does not match any iPad mini the company currently sells. MacRumors spotted the listing, and AppleInsider and 9to5Mac followed up on it.

What was found

According to MacRumors, the entry sits on the French version of Apple's regulatory information site, on a page that lists environmental characteristics. It describes an iPad mini Smart Folio carrying model number A3632. MacRumors says that number does not correspond to any current or past iPad mini case, and that Apple appears to have added the entry only recently. It is listed alongside iPhone 18 Pro accessories that were added in September.

AppleInsider adds some context on the numbering: the current A17 Pro iPad mini is A2993, and the nearest neighbouring identifier it could find belongs to the iPhone 17e. It also notes that Apple's own "Identify your iPad model" page does not include A3632, and that a batch of model numbers leaked in August did not contain it either.

What it does and does not tell us

The listing contains no specifications for a tablet, only the accessory. MacRumors reads it as a sign that a new iPad mini is on the way, and suggests that a freshly numbered Smart Folio could mean the existing iPad mini cases will not fit the next model. That points to a change in physical design, though the listing itself does not say what changed.

Apple has not announced a new iPad mini, and none of this is confirmed by the company. The accessory entry is circumstantial evidence, and the reports are careful to say that A3632 only "could be" connected to the rumoured OLED model.

How it fits the wider rumours

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that Apple is preparing an OLED iPad mini with an A20 Pro chip, and MacRumors has said the redesigned tablet is expected to arrive with a more water-resistant build. Several outlets have pointed to an Apple launch push on October 27 or 28, when a touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro and other Macs are also rumoured to appear. We covered the latest Gurman details about the tablet's display options only yesterday.

Regulatory and accessory listings have a mixed record as launch signals, since pages are sometimes updated ahead of time and sometimes by mistake. Still, a new Smart Folio with its own model number is a concrete detail pointing in the same direction as the supply-chain reporting. If the October event does go ahead as reported, Apple would have just over a week to put the rumours to the test.

Cupertino News will update this story if Apple confirms a new iPad mini or the listing changes.
