Overview

The first Macintosh was a self-contained computer: screen, logic board and disk drive lived in a single tall beige case with a carrying handle on top. A one-button mouse and a keyboard completed the package, and the machine booted straight into a desktop of windows, icons and menus.

Inside sat a Motorola 68000 running at about 8 MHz and just 128 KB of RAM, which was shared with the display. That tiny memory pool made multitasking impossible and forced users to swap floppies constantly, a limitation Apple fixed within months.

It launched with a now legendary television spot during the 1984 Super Bowl and shipped with MacWrite and MacPaint. Sales started strongly, then slowed, but the design language it established still shapes every Mac today.

Why it mattered

It brought the graphical interface and the mouse to a mass audience and defined what a Mac would be for the next forty years.
