Overview

The last major version of the iMac G4 added a 20-inch widescreen LCD at 1680 x 1050 pixels. To carry the extra weight the neck was made stiffer, which also made the display harder to position, and the machine weighed about 40 pounds.

It used a 1.25 GHz G4 with a 167 MHz bus, 256 MB of DDR memory, GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics and a SuperDrive. USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and AirPort Extreme were included.

The iMac G4 design was replaced by the iMac G5 in the following year, but the 20-inch model remains the high point of the dome-and-arm format.

Why it mattered

It was the finale of the dome iMac, offering the biggest screen of any consumer Mac to date.
