iMac G4 (17-inch)
A widescreen iMac with a 17-inch display.
Overview
In summer 2002 Apple stretched the iMac G4 into widescreen. The new 17-inch panel offered 1440 x 900 pixels, a layout that suited video and photo editing better than the 4:3 15-inch screen, while the dome and swiveling arm stayed the same.
The 800 MHz G4 shipped with 256 MB of memory, GeForce4 MX graphics and a SuperDrive for burning DVDs. Cheaper 15-inch models continued in the range, and a Feb 2003 refresh raised the processor to 1 GHz and added DDR memory.
The larger screen forced Apple to strengthen the arm and raise the weight, a trend that continued with the 20-inch model later the same year.
Why it mattered
It brought widescreen and DVD burning to the consumer all-in-one.
