iPhone X
The edge-to-edge OLED iPhone that replaced the home button with Face ID.
Overview
Released for the tenth anniversary of the iPhone, the X was a full break from the past. The home button disappeared, and the front became an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED screen with a notch at the top housing the TrueDepth camera system. Navigation moved to swipe gestures from the bottom of the screen.
Face ID replaced Touch ID, projecting thousands of infrared dots to build a 3D map of the user's face. The same hardware powered Animoji, animated characters that tracked the user's expressions. Behind it was the A11 Bionic chip with its first Neural Engine, which handled face recognition and augmented reality.
The back was glass for wireless charging, framed by a polished stainless steel band. The dual rear cameras both gained optical stabilization, and Portrait Lighting arrived in the camera. At $999 for 64GB it was the most expensive iPhone to date, and demand outstripped supply for weeks.
Why it mattered
It defined the look and gestures of every iPhone that followed and normalized the notch and Face ID.
