iPhone 12 Pro
A stainless steel Pro with LiDAR and a telephoto camera.
Overview
The 12 Pro offered the same 6.1-inch OLED display, Ceramic Shield glass and 5G of the iPhone 12 but wrapped it in a polished stainless steel frame with a textured matte glass back. The new Pacific Blue color was inspired by the sea and joined silver, graphite and gold.
The real separation was in the camera. A third lens provided 2x optical zoom, and a LiDAR Scanner, which measures depth with infrared light, allowed autofocus in very low light and sped up augmented reality scenes. Night mode portraits benefitted from the extra depth data, and it was the first iPhone able to capture photos in Apple ProRAW once that format arrived in an iOS update.
Video capture reached Dolby Vision HDR at 60 fps, a first for any phone. RAM rose to 6GB, and storage options began at 128GB.
Why it mattered
LiDAR on a phone helped establish depth sensing as a pillar of iPhone photography and AR.
