Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
Gigabit Ethernet as a standard feature, plus the first dual-G4 tower.
Overview
The Gigabit Ethernet G4 was the first personal computer with gigabit networking as a standard feature, which suited video and publishing workgroups moving large files. It also debuted the Apple Display Connector, a single cable carrying video, power and USB to the new flat-panel Apple displays.
Processors came in a single 400 MHz version and dual 450 and 500 MHz models, with an ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card at 16 MB on AGP 2x. Memory started at 64 MB of PC100, and hard disks from 10 to 40 GB.
Enthusiasts see it as a transitional model between the original G4 and the better-designed Digital Audio, but it was valued for its dual processor option.
Why it mattered
It put gigabit networking and dual processors into the Mac mainstream.
