Macintosh Centris 650
The Quadra-class desktop that launched Apple's short-lived Centris line.
Overview
The Centris line was meant to sit between the LC and Quadra families, and the Centris 650 was its most capable member. It ran a 68040 at 25 MHz (a cheaper 68LC040 without the math unit in base versions), with a desktop case related to the Macintosh IIvx.
It had more expansion options than the Quadra 700 it overlapped, including a NuBus slot and a processor direct slot, and models with built-in Ethernet performed close to the Quadra.
The Centris name lasted just months. In October 1993 Apple dropped it, rebranding the machines as Quadra 610, 650 and 660AV.
Why it mattered
It was Apple's attempt to simplify a confusing lineup, and a short-lived but capable 68040 machine.
