iMac G3 (Flower Power and Blue Dalmatian)

Patterned iMacs for the iTunes generation.

Vintage PowerPC G3, 400 to 600 MHz 15" Released Feb 22, 2001
Flower Power

Overview

The iMacs of early 2001 turned the computer into a canvas, with two patterned cases that looked like wallpaper: a flower motif and a Blue Dalmatian spot design. Indigo and Graphite remained for the more reserved.

It marked Apple's decisive turn toward digital music. Every model had a CD-RW drive and shipped with iTunes, which let owners rip and burn their own CDs. Processors ran at 400, 500 and 600 MHz, graphics were Rage 128 Pro or the new Rage 128 Ultra and hard disks ranged from 10 to 40 GB.

The patterned iMacs were a short-lived curiosity today remembered fondly, and they were gone in a year when the flat-panel iMac G4 arrived.

Why it mattered

It tied the iMac to Apple's digital music strategy months before the first iPod.
