eMac (2005)
The final eMac, with a 1.42 GHz G4 and Radeon 9600 graphics.
Overview
By 2005 the eMac was a mature product. The final revision used a 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 (1.25 GHz in the education version), DDR memory and an ATI Radeon 9600 with 64 MB of video memory, a step up from the earlier Radeon 9200.
The flat 17-inch CRT, 18-watt stereo speakers and rugged white case were unchanged. Hard disks of 80 to 160 GB were available, with a SuperDrive option for DVD burning.
Apple restricted the eMac to education customers in October 2005, then removed it in July 2006 as the Intel iMac took its place. It ran Mac OS X Tiger and later Leopard on 1 GHz and faster models.
Why it mattered
It was the last CRT Mac and the last PowerPC-based consumer desktop.
