Biography

Alan Dye grew up in Buffalo, New York and graduated from Syracuse University in 1997. He joined Apple in 2006, where he first worked on packaging and the unboxing experience for Apple products.

Dye became part of the design team that reworked the look of iOS for iOS 7 in 2013, and in 2015 he took charge of Apple's Human Interface design team. In that role he contributed to the interface of the iPhone X, the Apple Watch, the Dynamic Island and visionOS for the Vision Pro, and led the design of Liquid Glass, the translucent design language Apple unveiled across its platforms in 2025.

On December 3, 2025, Apple announced that Dye would leave to join Meta as chief design officer of its Reality Labs division, and that Stephen Lemay, a long-time designer at Apple, would take over the human interface design team. Dye left Apple at the end of the year. His departure was one of several senior changes at Apple at the close of 2025, and in January 2026 John Ternus' responsibilities grew to include industrial design.

Dye's work focused on how Apple's software looks and feels across devices, including typography, icons, layout and motion. The Liquid Glass design that debuted with iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe in 2025 was the most visible result of that work, applied across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Vision Pro.
