Overview
Where the iPhone 6 was a step up in size, the 6 Plus was a leap. Its 5.5-inch screen had a full 1080p resolution at 401 pixels per inch, and the home screen and many apps could rotate into a landscape layout that borrowed ideas from the iPad.
The camera had the same 8-megapixel sensor as the smaller model, but it added optical image stabilization, which improved low-light photos and steadied video. The larger battery lasted far longer, with Apple quoting up to 14 hours of video playback.
The phone was criticized for a rare tendency to bend under heavy pocket pressure, a story that became known as Bendgate, but sales were enormous. Together with the iPhone 6 it set records for first-weekend unit sales, ten million in total.
Why it mattered
It proved there was strong demand for a big iPhone and began the Plus and Max size tier that continues today.
