iPhone 15
USB-C, the Dynamic Island and a 48MP camera for everyone.
Overview
With the iPhone 15, Apple replaced the Lightning port with USB-C, bowing to European regulations and unifying charging across the iPhone, iPad and Mac. The standard model also inherited the Dynamic Island and the A16 Bionic chip from the previous year's Pro.
The 48-megapixel main camera was the headline for the regular iPhone. It shot 24-megapixel images by default and offered a 2x optical-quality telephoto crop from the sensor. Smart HDR 5 and a next-generation portrait mode that could capture depth data without switching modes were part of the package.
The back glass was infused with color, then ground to give a frosted texture, with a contoured aluminum frame. The display could reach 2,000 nits in sunlight. Colors were pink, yellow, green, blue and black, and the phone started at 128GB for $799.
Why it mattered
It marked the end of Lightning and spread the Pro features of the year before across the standard lineup.
